Todd Phillips’ Joker tells the origin story of Gotham’s most infamous villain as a raw, hypnotic character study. A film about loneliness, rage and a society that lets people fall through the cracks. Hildur Guðnadóttir, associate artist of the Holland Festival 2026, composed the film’s haunting score, for which she won an Oscar in 2019.
Joaquin Phoenix plays Arthur Fleck, a vulnerable, isolated man who slowly descends into madness while the world ignores him. Gotham is a city in crisis: poverty, anger, and social inequality form the breeding ground for violence. Phoenix’s physical transformation and intense performance make Fleck unmistakably empathetic, yet deeply unsettling. Also starring: Robert De Niro as Murray Franklin, a cynical talk-show host.
Joker is part of Hildur's Movie Picks: four films selected by associate artist Hildur Guðnadóttir, screening at EYE. The other films are Joker:Folie à Deux, Tár, and Persona.
