Listening with the IJ

Eco Acoustics

During Listening with the IJ by Dario Calderone and Maaike van der Linde, you can discover Amsterdam in a unique way: through listening. In the early morning, the best time to hear the city, they guide you along the IJ, encouraging you to attentively listen to the sounds around you. Listening with the IJ is organized in collaboration with the nomadic Amsterdam Museum and concludes with a shared breakfast.

Dario Calderone is a multidisciplinary artist and composer who approaches listening as an artistic, social, and ecological practice. Based in Amsterdam, he creates compositions, sound installations, and participatory projects inspired by Deep Listening, in which he is a certified facilitator. In 2025, he co-founded Stichting Eco Acoustics, a platform exploring listening as a way to connect human and more-than-human worlds. His current research focuses on collective dreaming and listening to dreams. Calderone is internationally recognized as a double bass player and has collaborated with artists such as Pierre Boulez, Annea Lockwood, and Christian Marclay. He has premiered hundreds of new works for solo double bass and is a member of MAZE.

Maaike van der Linde is a multidisciplinary artist, musician, and workshop facilitator, focusing on listening, ecology, and community-based projects. She is co-founder of Stichting Eco Acoustics. Trained as a flutist, she combines composition, participatory projects, and socially engaged music. She works with young musicians with refugee backgrounds, leads weekly music sessions in a refugee center, and performs in healthcare settings. As a flutist with the European chamber orchestra S T A R G A Z E, she has performed and toured worldwide.
