Ingmar Bergman (1918–2007, Sweden) was one of the 20th century’s most influential filmmakers and theatre directors. Known for films such as The Seventh Seal and Persona, his work interrogated existential and psychological themes with rigorous formal precision.
He was a prolific creator, directing and writing more than 60 films and documentaries, and over 170 plays throughout his life. Bergman also led the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm and deeply shaped modern theatre and cinema.
