Het Verre Oosten komt nabij

Olivier Messiaen, Jan van de Putte

Reinbert de Leeuw conducts a concert inspired by the Far East, featuring work by Olivier Messiaen and the world premiere of a new work by Jan van de Putte. The latter is based on the structure of the traditional Japanese Kabuki-theatre, more specifically Kagami-jishi. It’s a form of theatre that combines very small with very powerful gestures, the duality that is also present in this composition. Messiaen’s scintillating 1944 piece Trois petites liturgies de la présence divine is filled with exotic rhythms. The sound of piano, celesta and vibraphone evokes associations with the Balinese gamelan. The women’s choir sing religious texts, written by Messiaen himself, which focus on the ‘Divine Presence’.
