Exuberant, brightly coloured, and unrestrained. Bilderschlachten explores the power of images. Using Dadaist tableaux vivants choreographer Stephanie Thiersch, in collaboration with composer Brigitta Muntendorf (in 2024 at Holland Festival with Melencolia), create a powerful, passionate, and poetically provocative work.

The production comes to life with 41 musicians from the renowned Residentie Orkest, the Asasello Quartet, and eight dancers. The danse macabre (a theatrical dance that is at once macabre and playful, playing with themes of mortality, decay, and cultural chaos) draws from our cultural history and bombards us with a relentless stream of images, reminding us of the constant overstimulation of modern life.

Thiersch and Muntendorf chose Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Musique pour les soupers du Roi Ubu as a musical counterpart to the visual language of the piece. This collage brings together musical fragments from Bach to Beethoven, and from Berlioz to Stockhausen. Composer Brigitta Muntendorf arranged it so the music mirrors the visual references – a kind of 'sound version' of the images you see.
