Abed Kobeissy
Profile
Abed Kobeissy is a Beirut-based composer and musician, active across multiple genres including solo and collaborative projects, as well as music for film, theater, and dance. His primary instrument, the Levantine buzuq - a long-necked string instrument with clear tones - gives his work a distinct local identity while exploring experimental contemporary soundscapes. His compositions frequently address themes of family and home, drawing on the urban soundscape of the Levant as a source of inspiration.
Kobeissy has received commissions from the Berlin Biennale, the Berlin International Film Festival (2018), UNESCO’s Haneen Exhibition (2018), CTM Music Festival Berlin (2020), and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival/Irtijal (2021). In 2020, he became a fellow at The Sundance Institute’s Theater Lab as a composer for contemporary dance. He has also published research in music and musicology and served as a juror for Ettijahat’s AJYAL program (2020).
In 2016, he co-founded the electro-acoustic duo Two or The Dragon with percussionist Ali Hout, releasing the albums Prelude For The Triumphant Man (2017) and Dance Grooves For The Weary (2021). He is also a co-founder of the Lebanese-German beat-noise quartet Stellar Banger, with the album Data Is (2021). His work has been performed at international festivals and events including the Berlin International Film Festival, CTM Music Festival, Supersonic Int’l Music Festival, Donaueschingen Musiktage, and Féstival d’Avignon.
Kobeissy holds a Master’s degree in Advanced Studies on the semiotics of music in Arabic cinema and has taught at the Lebanese American University. Since 2012, he has also been active as a photographer.
