Archive 2009

Two leading composers took centre stage in 2009. Edgar Varèse’s oeuvre was performed in full at the Gashouder with visuals from American installation artist Gary Hill. The seventieth birthday of Louis Andriessen, the Netherlands’ greatest composer, was celebrated with two concerts.

And there was a living legend of dance as well: Mikhail Baryshnikov performed a duet with Ana Laguna, while the Dutch National Ballet celebrated 100 years of Les Ballet Russes. Besides all the big names, there was also a performance that ventured off the beaten track, literally: Brett Bailey’s Orfeus had audiences take a bus with blacked-out windows to a secret location for a performance about the African underworld.
