Archive 2006

2006 was a year with lots of film and moving images. Filmmaker Peter Greeneway’s opening installation Nightwatching in the Rijksmuseum disclosed the lives of people depicted in Rembrandt’s most famous work. Michel van der Aa composed an opera based on the film After Life by Japanese director Kore-eda Hirakazu. International Film Festival Rotterdam collaborated with the Holland Festival, showing films from early morning until late at night for four days straight, while British twins and stop-motion animators Stephen and Timothy Quay presented work at the Westergas and Muziekgebouw. Besides film, there was also Kabuki theatre from Japan, sounds of the steppe from Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia, dance by Akram Kahn, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Hans van Manen, and a comprehensive context programme.
