Archive 1995

Fifty years after the Allied liberation, there was little cause for optimism: major conflicts and genocides raged both within and outside of Europe. Against this backdrop, 1995 saw the Holland Festival take Art and Resistance as its theme, programming work like Schönberg’s A Survivor from Warsaw and Kurtág’s Songs of Despair and Sorrow

The festival also featured a retrospective on Pina Bausch’s work, but most spectacular was likely the performance of Stockhausen’s Helikopter Streichquartett, in which the members of the Arditti String Quartet were in a helicopter with Stockhausen mixing the sound of the propellers with the music of the four string instruments.
