There was lots of attention for Italian composer Luigi Nono, one of the angry young men of the 1950s, who died in 1990. Nono made socio-politically engaged work and pushed the limits of music, wanting to liberate both the proletariat and sound. The festival also featured lots of music by Russian composers from the past century. Prague’s political renewal was thwarted by Russia’s invasion in the 1960s, but made a comeback after the 1989 Velvet Revolution, which was reflected in this edition of the Holland Festival. Hans van Manen was featured with no less than fifteen choreographies, danced by both the NDT and the Dutch National Ballet.
