Marina Abramović

Marina Abramović (Belgrado, 1946) is sinds de jaren 70 internationaal gelauwerd als pionier van de performancekunst en wordt beschouwd als een van de belangrijkste grondleggers van deze kunstvorm. Ze bracht de performancekunst vanaf het experimentele begin naar de mainstream.

Marina Abramović gebruikt haar eigen lichaam in haar werk en test consequent en op een niets ontziende manier de grenzen van haar fysieke en mentale uithoudingsvermogen. Samen met kunstenaar Ulay (Frank Uwe Laysiepen, 1943–2020), die ze in 1975 in Amsterdam ontmoet, maakt ze – tot hun breuk in 1988 – furore met langdurende performances waarin deze grenzen tot het uiterste op de proef worden gesteld. In haar latere solowerk legt ze zich meer toe op het verkennen van spiritualiteit en het creëren van een wisselwerking waar het publiek actief onderdeel wordt van haar werk en energie.

Haar werk is te zien in het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in de meest complete solotentoonstelling in Nederland ooit. Ruim 60 sleutelwerken tonen de ontwikkeling van haar indrukwekkende oeuvre van de afgelopen vijftig jaar: van haar vroege werk, dat ze maakte in het voormalige Joegoslavië en in Amsterdam, tot de baanbrekende performances met haar partner Ulay en het solowerk waar ze nog steeds actief mee is. Te zien zijn registraties van legendarische performances, foto’s, video’s, sculpturen en heruitvoeringen van vier iconische performances die voor het eerst worden uitgevoerd in Nederland, waaronder The House with the Ocean View.
