Group exhibition about the yearning for a different reality

The exhibition The Art of Escapism shows the yearning to disappear into a different reality and flee everyday life. Inspired by the oeuvre of Holland Festival associate artist Gisèle Vienne, Melkweg Expo presents artists who depict modern-day escapism from a variety of disciplines. They explore the collective rush in which time and space follow different rules and in which the physical body trumps the mind. In a time in which all collective activities are prohibited and the corona pandemic is keeping everyone at home, the desire among young people to be together physically, to lose themselves in the crowd and escape reality has never been greater. The Art of Escapism dissects the beauty that lies in exploring boundaries, in the ecstasy of stepping outside your body and losing yourself in what you believe in. For make no mistake: every fantasy, every desire, every hope for the future is escapism.

Vlaams Cultuurhuis de Brakke Grond presentents the sculptural performance-installation Lake by Liza Houben, as part of The Art of Escapism, from 18 till 24 June.
