Compelling, magical, intense – the work of choreographer Arno Schuitemaker leaves no spectator unmoved. His performances are magical experiences. In his latest work he creates an ‘acoustic ballroom’: in an infinite flow of movement and sound, five dancers take the audience into a dynamic game between distance and proximity, space and energy. Arno Schuitemaker has been hailed one of the leading choreographers in the Netherlands by both magazines tanz and Dance Europe. With The Way You Sound Tonight he stretches the perception of the theatre hall, an experience that tangibly echoes in your memory.
After graduating at Delft University of Technology, Arno Schuitemaker (1976) changed his course and began a study in contemporary dance at Fontys Dance Academy in Tilburg.
He received his degree in choreography in 2007. In the meantime, Arno Schuitemaker has increasingly been seen as one of the most remarkable choreographers of the new generation. Both the German tanz and the English magazine Dance Europe have mentioned him as being "one of the leading contemporary choreographers in the Netherlands".
Arno’s work is something one has to experience. Using ongoing, perpetual movement, his perception-based works, sheds new lights on notions as rhythm, space and transformation. In collaboration with various perfomers, composers and lighting designers, his performances become true immersive encounters - compelling, magical, intense.
Over the past years, he created acclaimed works such as The Fifteen Project | DUET (2012), I is an Other (2014), Together_till the end (2015) and the trilogy WHILE WE STRIVE (2015), I will wait for you (2016) en If You Could See Me Now (2017). His works have been presented at renowned contemporary dance festivals and theaters in over 15 countries across Europe, and beyond. The Aerowaves network named him one of the most promising upcoming choreographers in 2013. He is a recipient of the Dioraphte Encouragement Award, and in 2016 he was awarded with the second jury prize at [re]connaissance in Grenoble for WHILE WE STRIVE.
Between 2013 and 2016, DansBrabant supported Arno Schuitemaker’s development one of his coproducers and from 2015 until 2017 he was artist-in-residence at ICKamsterdam. Since 2013 his work is being produced by SHARP/ArnoSchuitemaker supported by and in collaboration with various coproducers and partners in the Netherlands and abroad. SHARP/ArnoSchuitemaker is based in Amsterdam and receives multiyear funding by AFK (Amsterdam Fund for the Arts) from 2017-2020.
Arno Schuitemaker will make his Holland Festival debut with the world premiere of The Way You Sound Tonight.
