Compelling, magical, intense – the work of choreographer Arno Schuitemaker leaves no spectator unmoved. His performances are magical experiences. In his latest work he creates an ‘acoustic ballroom’: in an infinite flow of movement and sound, five dancers take the audience into a dynamic game between distance and proximity, space and energy. Arno Schuitemaker has been hailed one of the leading choreographers in the Netherlands by both magazines tanz and Dance Europe. With The Way You Sound Tonight he stretches the perception of the theatre hall, an experience that tangibly echoes in your memory.
Arno Schuitemaker (1976) studied contemporary dance at the Fontys Dance Academy in Tilburg after receiving a degree from the Delft University of Technology in Aerospace and Aviation Engineering.
After graduating in 2007 from the choreography department, he created theatre and location performances such as Proxemics (2007), ZONE (2008), ANOMIA (2008), and EXIT (2009). In 2009, he won the Encouragement Award from the Dioraphte Foundation.
Between 2010 and 2013 Schuitemaker produced work with the Brabant en Generale Oost production house, and DansBrabant granted him support between 2013 and 2016. He has also attracted international attention: in 2013, the Aerowaves network named him one of the most promising upcoming choreographers. He was also artist-in-residence at ICK between 2015 and 2017.
Schuitemaker is responsible for the creation of TIDE (2011), The Fifteen Project | QUINTET and The Fifteen Project | DUET (2012), I is an Other (2014), Together_till the end (2015) and a trilogy consisting of: While We Strive (2015), I will wait for you (2016) and If You Could See me Now (2017). In 2016 he received the second prize from the jury at [re]connaissance in Grenoble for While We Strive.
He creates his performances by returning time and again to the essentials: the body, movement, light, music and sound. Every work creates an empathetic, unique relationship between the performers and the audience. The senses are put on high alert through the magic of simplicity. Both the German-language magazine tanz and the English-language Dance Europe have called him ‘one of the leading dance makers in the Netherlands.’ Arno Schuitemaker will make his Holland Festival debut with the world premiere of The Way You Sound Tonight.
