Two acts from the Turkish rock scene perform at Paradiso. With their brand of solid, melodious rock songs and politically motivated lyrics, mor ve ötesi is one of the most popular bands in Turkey today. The band broke into the mainstream with the album Dünya Yalan Söylüyor (2004), one of the most important releases in the history of Turkish rock. Their album Büyük Düşler (2006) was voted album of the year by the Turkish Rolling Stone. When they represented Turkey in the Eurovision contest of 2008 their name was definitely made.
Şebnem Ferah – for whom this is her first performance in the Netherlands – is Turkey’s undisputed rock diva. Debuting in 1996, she took the pop and folk dominated Turkish charts by storm, a feat unheard of for a female rock singer in Turkey. Since, her compelling songs, her rebellious lyrics about love and women’s rights and her energetic live shows have made her a popular fixture on the Turkish rock scene.
With their trademark powerful, melodious songs and politically engaged lyrics, mor ve ötesi is Turkey’s number one rock band. Formed in 1995 in Istanbul, the band had already recorded three albums before they released their break-through album Dünya Yalan Söylüyor in 2004. Selling a quarter of a million copies, the album redefined Turkish rock music. Over the past ten years, the band has been engaged in many creative promotional activities and live concerts. They've appeared at many open air festivals along with acts such as R.E.M, Travis, Morrissey, Interpol, Marilyn Manson, James and Placebo. The band have played some five hundred concerts, touring Turkey as well as various European countries. Representing Turkey at the Eurovision song contest in Belgrade in 2008 marked mor ve ötesi's definitive international breakthrough. Following their latest studio album, Güneşi Beklerken, the band embarked on a US tour, including the prestigious SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. The album's critically acclaimed first single, Oyunbozan, was a commercial success. The succesful sales of their recordings and their growing fame both in Turkey and abroad, make mor ve ötesi one of the leading international ambassadors for Turkish rock music.
Şebnem Ferah (Yalova, 1972) is one of Turkey’s best and most famous female rock musicians. Ferah made her debut with the album Kadın. It was an unexpected commercial success at a time when sugary pop and folk music dominated Turkish radio. With her self-penned, rebellious lyrics about love and emancipation, she attracted a huge throng of fans. By now she has 7 studio albums and a live album to her name, each with a different sound, such as the solid rock record Can Kırıkları (2005) and the more acoustic and subdued Perdeler (2001). For the live recording of the concert 10 Mart 2007 İstanbul Konseri, she performed with an entire classical ensemble in addition to her long time band on stage. Her most recent record, Od (‘ fire’) came out in 2013. She is making her debut at the Holland Festival this year in collaboration with the Pera Foundation.
