HF Young Bookclub x de Nieuwe Liefde

In the lead-up to and during the 75th edition of the Holland Festival, HF Young, the community for younger visitors of the festival, will organise a number of in-depth events, such as discussions, talks, parties and other activities. For the HF Young Bookclub, three books have been selected that are in line with performances and themes from the Holland Festival programme of 2022.

During the first edition of the Bookclub of 2022, HF Young joins forces with de Nieuwe Liefde to discuss Yaa Gyasi's Weg naar huis / Homegoing in a small group in their beautiful library.

".. Two half-sisters, Effia and Esi, grow up separately in eighteenth-century Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman, in order to live in luxury. Esi is captured, sold into slavery and put on a boat to America. Homegoing tells of the lives of Effia and Esi's descendants over the next three hundred years. Yaa Gyasi moves freely through history and between two continents - from tribal struggle and slavery in Ghana to the Civil War in America, and from the coal mines of the southern United States to the migrations of people to Manhattan in the twentieth century - and in doing so paints a powerful and penetrating portrait of peoples in turmoil."
