Kuro – Joji Koyama en Tujiko Noriko (2017)
This French-Japanese production from 2017 is set in Paris. Tujiko Noriko plays the young Japanese woman Romi, who works at a karaoke bar and lives in a suburb where she takes care of her paraplegic lover. She tells him stories about the time they spent together in Japan, but then the mystery surrounding a man called Mr. Ono starts to unsettle everything. Weaving together personal stories, anecdotes and myths, the film takes a dark turn. Kuro plays with the mechanics of storytelling. A voice-over, intriguing imagery and an almost meditative soundtrack unavoidably propel the story, making for a visual celebration of desire, memory and fantasy.
