A successful director of music videos for Katy Perry, Rihanna and many others, Yoann Lemoine aka Woodkid decided to have a crack at becoming a singer himself. A few years on, he’s taking world cities such as London, Paris and New York by storm with his cool melancholic voice, his mix of rousing, orchestral pop and hypnotic neo-folk and last but not least his spectacular visuals. ‘I want people to feel like heroes when they hear my music,’ Lemoine has explained. His brass section provides the heroic moments, underscored by the drums’ soaring tribal rhythms. For this concert, the Metropole Orchestra add their string section to create an experience greater than ever before.

Biography

Woodkid is the stage name of Yoann Lemoine (16 March 1983), a French singer, music video director and graphic designer. He directed videos for the likes of Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey. In March 2011, his first EP Iron was released, followed by his debut album The Golden Age in March 2013. Since, Woodkid's impressive live act has been touring the major venues in world cities such as London, Paris and New York, playing Amsterdam in June 2014 at the Holland Festival.

Woodkid does not shy away from grand gestures, explaining that he wants his music to sound 'as tall as a skyscraper'. A mix of  rousing, orchestral pop and hypnotic neo-folk, he delivers his music in spectacular fashion, with horns, theatrical drums and truly breathtaking visuals, which he created himself and which sweep the audience along into an overwhelming, often futuristic world which we recognise from the stylised videos he created for Iron, Run Boy Run and other releases.

Yoann Lemoine started his career as an animator and later a commercials and music video director. After having studied illustration and animation, Lemoine worked for film director Luc Besson and for Sofia Coppola, amongst others. In 2010 he won five Lions Awards for his AIDS Awareness campaign Graffiti at the Cannes Lions Advertising Festival. Lemoine has directed music videos for the likes of Moby, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift,  Lana Del Rey, Drake and Rihanna. In 2012 Lemoine was awarded the Best Director of the Year Award at the MVPA Awards in Los Angeles as well as receiving six MTV Video Music Awards nominations.

In March 2011 Woodkid's musical debut, the EP Iron was released, followed in May 2012 by the single Run Boy Run, the video for which was directed by Lemoine himself and received a Grammy Award nomination. The album The Golden Age was released in March 2013, reaching top ten positions in France, Switzerland and Germany.
